The Call of the Wild

The Call of the Wild, written by Jack London, is a novel that truly astounded me. Published in the year 1903, this classic tale of companionship and love (in a sense) has made such an impact on literature. It has also managed to get itself banned in 1929 in Yugoslavia and Italy for Jack London openly having socialist views. The book was also burned in 1933 by Nazi’s for a “similar reason”. However, The Call of the Wild is the epitome of the classic saying “a dog is man’s best friend”.
The Call of The Wild is about a man named John Thornton and his dog Buck. The story mainly focuses on Buck as the main character, and the narrator walks us through what is going on in his life. The story is set during the Gold Rush when many of dogs were needed to help carry supplies and mush. Buck happens to fall into the hands of Thornton after being abused and neglected in the past. Thornton comes across him when Buck and his old owners are trying to travel across a river, but he refuses. Due to his refusal, Thornton sees something special in Buck, so he takes him in from his old owners and cares for him. Thornton’s actions impact Buck in a spectacular and positive way, yet Buck will never be able to get away from the thoughts of what his previous owners had done to him in his past. In the rest of the book, you will experience the struggles and triumphs throughout Buck's life.
I really enjoyed reading this book, rating it a 9/10. The plot is so unique and touching. At first, the book can be a bit hard to read because it seems slow or dense. However, the story quickly picks up and will become one of your favorite books. The raw relationship between Buck and Thornton is truly moving and you are sure to get sucked into the book so much that it may make you laugh or even cry at times. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a motivational book about friendship and having the will to survive.

  1. Great review! I read part of The Call of the Wild a few years ago, but I don't really remember much about it and gave up on it after a while. However, I might not have gotten far enough for the story to really pick up, so I will consider giving it another try based on your suggestions. I also liked how you gave a bit about the book's history as well.

  3. I read this book a couple of years ago, and I remember really enjoying it. Reading your review reminded me of the plot of the story and the unique relationship between Buck and Thornton. As mentioned in the other comments, I also enjoyed reading your opening paragraph, as the history of the book provided a good backstory. If you enjoyed this book, you should also read White Fang, another book by the same author with a similar premise. Overall, excellent review!
