A "Legend"ary Blog Post

Wes Lu – 10/29/2019

"What a joke! Poor little rich girl's fallen in love with the Republic's most famous criminal."

Hello everyone! It's time for my review, which is totally on time (sorry Emma, Nate, and Clara). In this blog post I will be talking about Legend, my favorite book of all time. I love Legend so much that it is fair to say that I have read over this book tens of times. I am so excited that I am able to talk about it today.

The quote I put at the beginning of this blog post is from Legend, and I feel as though it perfectly captures the plot and humor of this book. I'll explain more about that in the review. With that said...

*No Spoilers*

June is a 14 year old living in the wealthy Ruby Sector of Los Angeles, The Republic. The remnants of western American are now called the Republic after long and bloody civil war that is still being fought. June comes from a wealthy family (although both her parents died when she was young) and is training at the Republic's most prestigious military school, being groomed to become an officer in the Republic's ranks. Her brother, Metias, already serves as in the military as an officer patrolling the streets of LA. All in there life is normal, until Metias is killed by the infamous criminal Day.

Day is a 14 year old living the Lake Sector, a slum sector which has recently been hit by The Plague. The Plague is a disease that has been spreading through the slum sectors of LA and killing thousands of people. Day, the most notorious criminal in The Republic, has been trying to thwart the Republic's war efforts in hopes of allowing the Colonies (the country fight the Republic in a civil war). He has destroyed fighters, burnt airships, stolen money, but one thing he has never done is kill anyone. This time his mission is simple, steal some Plague medicine for his younger brother Eden. The go wrong and Day does what he needs to in order to survive

After her brother is murdered in cold-blood, June goes on a long hunt to find Day, the murderer of her Meties. Her chase leads her across LA, through slum sectors and more slum sectors, revealing dark secrets about the very nation that cultivated her success. She doesn't find anything, until a stroke of luck...

I said I'm not going to spoiler the entire plot so I'm not going to. I am available for that if you want that (hit me up). My point is that this book is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and I cannot emphasize this enough. The way the plot is constructed and how the narrative is told (from Day's point-of-view and June's point-of-view) is nothing short of stunning. It is in its pure essence a sci-fi dystopian love story, which I love every bit of. Another thing (last one, I promise) is the plot twist. Wow! that was a twisty twist.

When it comes to the shortcomings of Legend, there are none. I might be a bit biased because I love the book so much but I honestly have no complaints about this book because of everything I have said above. As promised this is the end of my review. I'll put some Legend quotes under so I can try to convince you to read this book. I will be reviewing the second book the the trilogy, Prodigy, next-next-next-next week. Peace out, and read you next time!

"Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time."

"If you want to rebel, rebel from inside the system. That's much more powerful than rebelling outside the system."

" 'You're brilliant,' he says. 'But you're a fool to stay with someone like me.'
I close my eyes at the touch of his hand. 'Then we are both fools.' "

"The memory fades, and I’m left hanging on to the ghosts of his
words."

"June has never looked more beautiful than she does now, unadorned and honest, vulnerable yet invincible."

  1. I was required to read this book for 7th grade English, and I didn't actually enjoy it that much. I felt like the plot seemed slightly cliche and that the story lacked depth and a connection to the characters. Regardless, I like the addition of the quotes at the end however they feel rather disconnected and without a purpose. I think my favorite part of the review is the 'approved by the Republic' portion, as it perfectly conveys the complete control and regulation the Republic has over its citizens. Besides that, good job with the pun in the title I guess? It really wasn't that good.

  2. I was also required to read this in 7th grade English (U4SD gang) but I enjoyed it and went on to read the other 2 books in the trilogy. I thought that the story was a bit slow and boring at some points but that was overcome by the book's amazing action sequences which only improved as the trilogy went on. I also read this book many times over as there was noting else I could do in class. This review was very Wes-like while still actually managing to give information. That was surprising! But you know what's not surprising? Saving 15% or more on car insurance when you switch to Geico! I really liked the quotes you picked out and thought they really brought out the story's feel. Great review and (Benji rip off time!) deserves many bolognas in the days to come.

  3. I read this book pretty recently and I absolutely loved it! I agree with you that the narration is great and that the plot was very well constructed. I kind of saw a plot twist coming, but it still powerfully changed the story for me. I also appreciate the quotes you chose and think they reflect the idea of the story well. Good job on a well-written post, and I'm looking forward to reading your Prodigy review!

  4. I could tell your review was a bit biased, but I also appreciate the summary of the book. This sounds somewhat like you run of the mill sci-fi love story, but still sounds mildly interesting. The quotes seem very cheesy and cookie cutter, though I could see how they could be taken as inspirational. I think I'll definitely put it on my reading list since it's right up my alley with the sci-fi genre, though it kinda seems just like your average "foes to lovers" story.

  5. I really love how enthusiastic you are about this series. I can tell that you really wanted to write this post, and worked hard on it. I also love the quotes you put in there, and I agree that they do capture what the book is about. I have read the series, and I agree that the books are amazing. I wouldn't say they're my favorite book series (I think the Lunar Chronicles is better, as you know from our debates, but that's just my opinion), but I still really liked it. Thanks for the review!
